I was finally able to attend a show again yesterday, so I was really looking forward to this one, although the bands are not on top of my list at all. I had seen Young Livers before and I have one record by Bridge And Tunnel, so I was kind of prepared as to what I had to expect. I never heard anything of Rockwell though, a local band from Cologne and Bonn.
Rockwell started the show early which was pretty convenient for me because I had to work the next day. Honestly, I really came to appreciate those early ending shows recently. Seems like I’m not much of a nighthawk anymore.
Anyway, I’m always impressed by bands who perform as a trio simply because of the way they manage to put up a deep and thorough sound which doesn’t sound like it has any holes. Which was what Rockwell did. Granted, the sound was a bit disappointing, but I blame that on my position in the room as I was standing next to the stage without any exposure to the P.A. cabinets. Although it was still only barely half past eight a nice crowd had gathered and they really liked what they were listening to. Rockwell‘s music is kind of nostalgic as it has a huge 90’s touch to it. I don’t really know what they remind me of, but they would have fitted in perfectly on a show sometime in 1997. Heavy and distorted, yet some melodic elements to it. Nice.
Young Livers were a class of there own afterwards. They blew off the roof with their set. I don’t know if it’s something in the Gainesville water which gets bands to sound so much alike, but they are also following the path laid out by Hot Water Music. Rough vocals, hard guitars, lots of melodies, nice breakdowns, very energetic. A short and great concert by a great band. What more can you ask for.
As for Bridge And Tunnel I chose to hang back and chat with a friend of mine who I hadn’t seen and talked to in quite a while so I don’t have anything to say about.
A very nice and relaxing evening which gave me the chance to hook up with a few people I hadn’t seen in what must have been ages. If only there were more chances like those.
