After what could have been a nice and easy evening at the “Underground” beergarden during the All Schools Festival on Friday was rained out I was happy a friend offered me a ride to a show in the lovely city of Solingen. I hadn’t heard the names of the bands before, but because this is the 21st century and we all have access to Myspace I gave their songs their a listen and decided to join the fun.
We left early because the flyer said the first band was to start at 8 pm, but as it turned out (as always) that wasn’t the case. The “Waldmeister e.V.” was a very small room in what looked to be an old storage house. When we arrived there quite a few people were hanging out in front of the place but there was no sign of the bands. Even in the room there were no instruments. Turned out the Americans were late because they got stuck in a traffic jam on the Autobahn, so everyone was hurrying to set up the equipment quickly.
Braveyoung started the evening and I have to admit that they were the band I was looking forward to the most. Their epic, atmospheric and dark sound wasn|t that perfect, but given the surroundings it was definetely okay. The first song they played didn’t seem to end at all and streched on for almost 15-20 minutes. They had a small break in between and started their next one with a xylophon, this one being just as good as the opener. But it all ended after only 20-25 minutes, because the schedule was pretty tight. Tough luck.
Next up was a local band we didn’t bother to watch. We only entered the room for last song. Screamo metalcore which was very average at best.
City Of Ships rounded off the evening, but I have to say that I found their sound to be a bit too sludge-ish. Still the generated a lot of energy and surprised me with the way they used the loops and delays. It’s always fascinating how three people can create such a powerful noise. They also only played a shortened set because of the late arrival at the venue. Well well well, The price for the show was only five bucks so I guess you can’t complain there although we surely would have liked to see a little bit more from both american bands.
So, a nice and relaxing evening with two bands who were very interesting and good. Hadn’t had that in a long time.
