According to this article in the New York Times Blog “Bats” the MLB plans to expand the number of participating countries for the next WBC in 2013. And to my surprise one name on the list was Germany.
“Major League Baseball officials would not say which teams would be added. If tournament organizers use the 2009 International Baseball Federation rankings, the highest-ranked nations who were not involved in the Classic are Nicaragua, Spain, Brazil, Germany, Czech Republic, Philippines, Britain and Colombia.”
Now I don’t think a German team might be able to pull off a stunt like The Netherlands did in this year’s competition. They do have a few minor league players, but to my knowledge none of those play above Low A ball. But it might be a good way for German baseball to win new fans. And maybe it gives German baseball a chance to compete at least on the European level. The Netherlands have been the dominating force over the past years, but when more teams get a chance to play in a huge tournament, which will have them prepare for it a lot more than they do for their normal league play, I suppose, then that can only be good for the competition.
