Finally just right for the start of this year’s spring tournament at Koshien Stadium the fresh air of spring time came to Cologne at last. And not a day to soon. There wasn’t any way for me to watch any of today’s games and I am still not quite sure whether there is a live stream link on the MBS site or not. But I believe I missed out on a great start to the tournament.
Konkou Osaka 金光 (Osaka) vs Kurashiki Kougyou 倉敷工 (Okayama) 10-11 (12th)
Right from the start the two opening game contestants were at it. Konkou Osaka and Kurishiki Kougyou slugged it out over 12 innings without moving an inch. I only saw the top half of the first inning so far, but it looked very promising. Apart from the game itself I was completely taken in by Konkou Osaka‘s battle song, a very intimidatingyet also very calming melody which was repeated over and over again by the supporters. It seems as if right from the first pitch onwards the lead was changing every inning. Then, in the 9th, Konkou went up in front by three runs and they looked as if they were able to advance to the next round. But Kurashiki tied them, answering with three runs of their own and thus sending the game into extra innings. After a scoreless 10th and 11th the drama reached its climax in the 12th inning. Konkou Osaka scored one run and went ahead, Kuarshiki had to repeat what they did in the 9th to stay alive. They tied the game and hit a sayonara base hit afterwards sending Konkou Osaka into agony. I am sure this was a game that didn’t deserve a loser and Konkou Osaka must have shed a lot of tears after the final out. But what a great way to start the tournament for the neutral spectators. This will surely be a game people will talk about in years to come.
Kamimura Gakuen 神村 (Kagoshima) vs Chuukyoudai Chuukyou 中京 (Aichi) 1-5
Kousei Gakuin 光星 (Aomori) vs Imabari Nishi 今治西 (Ehime) 1-2
Surely there was no way the other two matchups for the day were nearly as thrilling as the opening game. But it seems that while in the first match the batters were dominating the action, in the third one the pitchers kept their respective teams in the game. This one was also decided by a sayonara base hit when a relay throw home was off target allowing the winning run to score.
With such a start I am really looking foward to the games over the next days.
