Sometimes it feels like evenings long ago happened just a few weeks ago and that’s exactly what it was like for me last night. It wasn’t that long ago that I had seen our good friends of The Gaslight Anthem though. They played in Cologne last summer. But seeing them again sure felt like they came back after a 4 week trip. We continued where we left off. It was almost like a family reunion.
Their reputation skyrocketed over the past few months and the show sold out in such a short time I wasn’t even able to get any tickets. So I was very pleased when Benny assured me that there are always places on the guest list. So me, Pascal and Lisse took off for the Underground and everything was fine. It was great to see the guys again and everything was like it was in the fall of 2007 when we hang out with them for the first time. Andree and Björn were there as well, hence the feeling of the family reunion.
First up were Polar Bear Club, a band I had never heard of before, but guitar Alex was praising them so much, I had to take a look at them. Very nice late 1990s punkrock-emo-hardcore with lots of rather edgy guitar riffs. Not your average stuff when you think about that genre. Sounded slightly like Saves The Day, but a little more complicated. The crowd seemed to like and when I spoke with one of the guys (whose name I forgot, forgive me please) after their set he was very appreciative of the crowd response.
I skipped Frank Turner‘s singer/songwriter performance to hang back backstage although everybody kept telling me how great he was. From what I was able to hear from outside they were absolutely right. Seemed to be a lot of fun, but I decided to smoke a cigarette outside.
The Gaslight Anthem were their usual selves again. Boy, I hardly know a band who deserves their success more than those guys. The people were anxiously awaiting the show and right from the start everything was in place for a great evening. They seemed to have a lot of fun up on stage and played most of their hit songs. The crowd liked it, they came out for one more encore and that was it. What made this even more pleasant was the announcement by Bryan about the prices people paid on ebay to get a ticket. I read something of up to 100 Euros. While I consider that way too much, Bryan was so kind to encourage people not to spent so much money on a single show. The band is scheduled to return to Europe in the summer, so there was absolutely no need for anyone to shell that much money. Great thing. The only letdown for me was the Pearl Jam cover, but that’s only because I have never been a huge fan of them anyway, haha.
Hell, this was a great evening, although I had to be on my way back home by 11 pm. It was nice to talk to bass Alex about life on tour and how things changed for them over the past few months. It was wonderful to joke around with Benny, it was great to have fun with guitar Alex and it was good to see Bryan and his wife. I just love those guys. And I hope I will be able to make it to another show on this tour. Would be a blast.
