This was a very unexpected christmas present as I got this one from a friend who is a member of this band. I remember I listened to their music some time ago when she gave me the link to their Myspace site, but I can’t quite recall if I liked the music back then. What’s most irritating to me is the way they designed their logo. It reminds me of those bands who are nowadays labelled “Krautrock” and to me always had the feeling of drugs, strange psychedelic arrangements, endless songs … well, not my cup of tea, really.
So I was very happy to find out that the music was slightly different from what I was expecting when looking at the cover. This is very nice instrumental music. Not the usual sludge-doom-slowcore kind of stuff, this is different. I have the feeling one can sense all kinds of influences in their music, mainly rooting in the punk and hardcore scene. Château Laut is what they call themselves, a combination of German and French words meaning “Castle Loud” if I am not mistaken.
This actually reminds me a lot of Flipper, although I don’t think I can really say why, because I don’t know the reason myself. Maybe it’s because of the way it is produced. The sound is very 80-ish without sounding too clean. And the music is somewhat hard to get into. But once you manage to do that you’ll be rewarded with a lot of things. I like it when you have to work with yourself to understand the music yo are listening to. true, it’s nice to turn your head off every once in a while and listen to boring and simple pop music. My preferred choise for this would be Japanese plastic pop music, by the way. Anyway, this is completely different. You have to pay attention here. Which is very nice.
So this is a recommendation to anyone interested in checking out something different from theunderground of Berlin. I hope me and my boys in Arktika, my new band, will get a chance to play with Château Laut at least once. Now that’s something to look forward to.
